Chesterfield Campus
Chesterfield Village Research Center
(near St. Louis, Missouri)
700 Chesterfield Parkway North
St. Louis, MO 63198
Phone: 314/694-1000

Size: 210 acres; 10 acres in buildings and parking, 30 acres of traditional landscaping, 10 acres restored to prairie, and the remaining 170 acres managed for wildlife. The buildings include a little over one million square feet of research space.

History: The Chesterfield Village facility was developed as a life sciences research center and opened in 1984 to provide high-quality research facilities. The first building, GG, opened that year, and AA, BB and HH buildings were occupied over the next few years. Following a series of corporate changes, ownership of the site was acquired by Pfizer. Monsanto leases GG building for some of its research.

Recent Accomplishments:

  • The site attained its Wildlife Habitat Council "Certified Wildlife Habitat" status in 1994, and was awarded "Corporate Habitat of the Year" in 1996.

  • Traditional landscaping was converted to sustainable forms of landscaping by expanding prairie areas, replacing exotic plantings with native species, and experimenting with buffalo grass and "no-mow" fescues to reduce mowing and impact on the ecosystem.

The Creve Coeur Site began with the construction of N building in the mid-1950s. General Offices buildings were added through the mid-1960s on the East Campus, and through the early 1970s on the West Campus. Creve Coeur Research was developed in the early 1960s with further expansion of U building and O Building in the early 1980s.

Recent Accomplishments:

  • New Data Center Construction
Ground was broken for the new Monsanto Information Technology Data Center in St. Louis on Feb 20, 2006. Members of Monsanto's Executive Team, the Information Technology Leadership Team, and local, county and state officials participated in the ceremonial groundbreaking. The two-story, 40,000-square-foot center will be built on the west side of the Creve Coeur campus, south of F Building. The overall cost of the project is $21 million, of which $13 million will be spent on building construction. Construction is expected to be completed by summer 2007.

  • VPP Star Certification Awarded to St. Louis Sites
Monsanto's World Headquarters in Creve Coeur and its research operations in Chesterfield have received the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star certification – the agency's top safety classification. To earn the Star designation, a site must undergo a rigorous OSHA audit showing that its safety programs and practices reach high levels of excellence. The location must also have an accident rate that is below the rest of the industry. The entire site must meet all the safety criteria to be certified.

The OSHA VPP Star audit team completed its final inspection of the sites in August 2005 and identified no issues that needed additional attention. One-on-one interviews of employees and contractors by the OSHA team showed that everyone was positively involved with aspects of safety and with team involvement in safety performance.

  • Monsanto's World Headquarters Recognized for Wildlife Conservation
Monsanto's World Headquarters in Creve Coeur has recently received its Corporate Wildlife Habitat Certification. This two-year recertification presented by the Wildlife Habitat Council recognizes Monsanto and its employees for its demonstrated commitment toward long-term wildlife habitat enhancement efforts. Monsanto has been involved with the Wildlife Habitat Council since the council was formed in 1988. This was the first cooperative effort between the environmental community and industry focused on bringing together conservation and business. (October 2006)

  • G Lobby Undergoes ADA Upgrades
In August, G Lobby will be under construction for approximately two months as needed upgrades are added to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). These upgrades include: new hinging of the lobby entry doors with power assisted center doors; elevator cab upgrades; a new unisex ADA restroom in G Lobby; and a chair lift from the parking lot level which will be installed early next year. In addition, a new receptionist station and full-height glass for soundproofing of G3 atrium will be added.

  • Monsanto Wins Beautification Award
You may have noticed the sign placed at the front of the east entrance on Olive Street, but if you didn't -- the Monsanto Corporate Headquarters site has won the City of Creve Coeur Beautification Awards Program award in the "Large Commercial" category. This was the second year for the city's relatively new awards program, and the city reports that the judges had a tough job choosing winners. Other categories include Residential, Subdivision Entrance, Small Commercial and Institutional.

The Recycling, Environment and Beautification Committee toured the city on July 26 to view the gardens of 23 finalists from all categories. During their brief tour of Monsanto the judges were impressed with the care of entire site – including the use of native plants and the number of qualified horticulturists who maintain the manicured campus. Monsanto representatives will be honored with other winners at the city's holiday appreciation dinner in December.
