History: Located about 15 miles up the Mississippi River from New Orleans, the Luling Plant was founded by the Lion Oil Company in 1954 as a nitrogen products manufacturing facility. At that time, manufacturing units produced anhydrous ammonia, nitric acid and ammonium nitrate. In 1956, the facility became part of Monsanto with the merger of Lion Oil and Monsanto. In the 1960s, the plant became part of the newly created Agricultural Chemicals Division, and diammonium phosphate was added to the product line. In the 1970s, conversion of adipic acid to acetaminophen began along with the implementation of the newly invented product, Roundup® herbicide. During the period of the 1980s and 1990s, the nitrogen products business declined at the facility, and none are produced at Luling today. However, since the mid-1970s, the portion of the plant associated with the production of Roundup® and its intermediates has expanded continuously, especially since 1995. Today, the Luling Plant proudly produces the family of Roundup® herbicides.
Plant Focus Areas: The Luling Plant has four key focus areas – maintaining the freedom to operate; providing cost-effective, quality products to our customers; growth and continuous improvement of business results; and developing people. We determine the key leverage factors that impact our business and educate our people about those drivers and how they can impact the bottom line through their daily jobs. We practice cost management around our major leverage factors as our key tool for improving business results.
