Monsanto expands science scholarships to ten statewide
(April 10, 2007) - High school seniors interested in pursuing a science degree are invited to apply for the Monsanto Hawaii Life Sciences Scholarship, which has been expanded statewide to ten scholarships of $1,000 each. The educational grants are designed to help students further their education in the sciences.
The scholarships are open to students of all public and private high schools in Hawaii who will be graduating in good standing this year and will be attending an accredited college or university to pursue a post-secondary education in a discipline related to the life sciences. Examples include agriculture, agronomy, biology, botany, genetics, horticulture, plant physiology, chemistry, crop science and soil science.
"Today, there many exciting and diverse careers available in the field of science and technology," said Paul Koehler, community and scientific affairs manager for Monsanto Hawaii. "Monsanto is pleased to be able to support our youth by helping to create opportunities for those who interested in pursuing this career path."
Previously, Monsanto Hawaii offered two scholarships annually to students in Maui County, where the grant program originated. Monsanto's decision to expand its scholarships statewide is a reflection of the company's growing number of employees statewide; the company currently employs approximately 600 full-tine and 100 seasonal employees in Hawaii.
"Monsanto is a tremendous supporter of science education nationally and of the local communities in which our employees live and work," Koehler said. "We're thrilled to be able to offer more scholarships this year to deserving students across the state."
