Timeline of the Industry's Call for Wheat Advancements
- 2007
- The National Association of Wheat Growers and the U.S. Wheat Associates’ Joint Biotechnology Committee approved resolutions that supported seed companies resuming biotech wheat research.
- November 2008
- The U.S. wheat industry released a publication, “Biotechnology Principles for Commercialization,” which outlined the details for when the organization and its growers would be ready to accept biotech wheat.
- January 2009
- More than 75 percent of respondents to a NAWG survey said they are open to the commercialization of biotech wheat.
- May 2009
- Nine wheat-related associations from Australia, Canada and the United States released a statement calling for investment in biotech wheat.
- July 2009
- Monsanto acquired WestBred, LLC, which specializes in wheat breeding. The transaction will give WestBred access to Monsanto’s technology platforms to provide wheat farmers benefits through both breeding and biotechnology.
