6 Great Winter Outdoor Activities in St. Louis

1. A hike at Powder Valley

How about an icy hike through the forested hills of Powder Valley with its kid-friendly paved paths? After a hike visitors can check out the Wild Bird Sanctuary or stay in your car and hunt for elk, deer, bison and geese at Lone Elk park.

2. Mark C. Steinberg Ice Rink in Forest Park

In the shadow of the Central West End the Mark C. Steinberg ice rink is the perfect way to spend a winter day in St. Louis. It is the largest outdoor rink in the Midwest and is open during the winter months no matter what the temperature. Skate admission is good for the entire day so you’ll have plenty of time to practice your triple sow cows and double axels.

3. St. Louis Zoo

The St. Louis Zoo is not only open during the winter months but admission is free! You can’t get any better than free. Despite the cold the zoo is still a fun way to spend a day. Check out the penguin house, the penguin-friendly temperatures actually feel cozy on colder days. In the off season the zoo opens around 9am and the morning hours are a great time to see some of the more active animals before they take their afternoon naps.

4. Snow tubing at Hidden Valley

Just a few minutes southwest of St. Louis you’ll find Hidden Valley Ski resort in Wildwood, MO. The resort is a great place to spend the day on the slopes. The resort offers skiing lessons but our employees say that Hidden Valley also has some of the best hills for tubing.

5. Hiking at Castlewood State Park

There are eight hiking trails to explore in Castlewood State Park and the scenic views, no matter the weather, are a favorite among Monsanto employees. The park straddles both sides of the Meramec River and is considered one of the best mountain biking locations in the St. Louis area.

Creve Coeur Park, located west of St. Louis in Maryland Heights, is a favorite among our employees. The park is the largest park in St. Louis County and features scenic trails and the largest natural lake in Missouri.
