Elemental phosphorus (chemical symbol P4) is used in a wide variety of commercial applications in addition to glyphosate. This ranges from preservatives in foods to dentifrices in toothpaste. Non-flammable hydraulic fluids and metal lubricants require phosphorus-based additives.
Phosphorus can be made into a “food grade” phosphoric acid, such as is common in soft drinks, and into a water purifier used by municipal drinking water systems. For Monsanto, the primary use is making the active ingredient in Roundup® brand agricultural herbicides.
