David Nothman, Monsanto Soybean Agronomic Trait Lead
Roundup Ready 2 Yield approved in three key Asian countries

Monsanto announced this week it received approval in Japan, the Philippines and Taiwan for import of its second generation soybean technology, Roundup Ready 2 Yield. This approval adds to the full regulatory approval Monsanto already received for production in Canada and the United States.

Monsanto Soybean Agronomic Trait Lead David Nothmann says with  feed, food and environmental approvals in the three Asian countries, Roundup Ready 2 Yield is one step closer to U.S. growers’ fields.

He says with four years of data to support it, Roundup Ready 2 Yield will provide growers with the potential for a 7 to 11 percent per bushel yield increase on their farms. And he says given current soybean prices, Roundup Ready 2 Yield will provide great value for growers.

In Iowa and Illinois for example, where soybean yields have averaged about 50 bushels an acre, Roundup Ready 2 Yield creates an additional 40 to 65 dollars per acre compared to Roundup Ready soybeans. Given current soybean prices, that product provides great value for the grower.

Nothmann says Roundup Ready 2 Yield will set the landscape for Monsanto’s soybean technology pipeline. He says the increased yield potential will serve as the base for the introduction of next generation technologies in soybeans, like enhanced oil products and Dicamba-tolerant soybeans.

And Nothmann says no matter what new soybean technology Monsanto introduces, it will have the same great qualities of Roundup Ready soybeans that growers have grown to trust.

Roundup Ready 2 Yield continues to build on the simple, dependable, flexible weed control and crop safety growers have come to expect with Monsanto’s Roundup Ready system.

Nothmann says with these approvals, Roundup Ready 2 Yield is on track for a 2009 controlled commercial release in the U.S. He says Monsanto hopes this will allow growers to become familiar with its benefits. Then, Monsanto is planning for a full commercial release in 2010.
