The H.O. Sargent Member Award originated in the New Farmers of America (NFA), the former organization for African-American agriculture students. In 1965, the NFA was incorporated into the FFA. These awards, reinstated in 1995, will continue as an annual recognition program for FFA members that develop ways to recruit a more diverse group of students to participate in agricultural education.
The H.O. Sargent Non-Member Award recognizes citizens who have achieved and promoted diversity through agricultural education and FFA.

H.O. Sargent Member
Deundray Evans, a member of the Ponchatoula FFA Chapter in Ponchatoula, La., was
presented with the 2005 H.O. Sargent Award.
When Evans joined his FFA Chapter he noticed there was a small percentage of minorities in his chapter. He wanted all students to have the opportunities the National FFA Organization had to offer, so he organized numerous activities to promote diversity. He established a basketball tournament among classes and worked hard to encourage all minorities to play. Evans is the son of Patricia Ann Evans and Glenn L'Roy. His FFA advisor is Alice Dubois.
