Pledge Award Winner: Improving Safety and Creating Opportunities for the Local Workers in San Quintin, Mexico

In 2007, the Seminis vegetable seed production site at San Quintin partnered with the community to provide more local value-added jobs and to reduce the site’s dependency on migrant workers by 50 percent by 2009. The team updated the site’s salary strategy, and they began engaging community leaders in more dialogue. Then they set up a site-specific environment, safety and health team to improve employee safety knowledge and raise preventative behaviors. As a result, migrant work was completely eliminated in 2008, and the site’s rate of injuries and illnesses was reduced by more than 90 percent. In addition, the project provided additional stable job opportunities for workers in the local community.
