Pledge Award Winner: Introduction of Insect-Protected Biotech Cotton in Burkina Faso (Africa)

Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world. Now, after a nearly 8-year process, Burkina Faso’s 2 million smallholder farmers have the choice to plant insect-protected cotton. The Monsanto team provided guidance and expertise by implementing numerous partnership opportunities as the country developed its regulatory stewardship framework. Throughout the process, the team worked closely with local scientific experts, sharing knowledge with the cotton industry, producers, seed dealers, government officials, and community members. This transparency helped cotton growers develop trust and confidence as the trials progressed. This project is a commercial success for Monsanto, and at the same time, it improves the lives of smallholder farmers and expands economic development in a resource-poor country.
