Safety

"Monsanto's commitment to a workplace that is safe and healthy and operations that are environmentally sustainable is specifically set forth in our global environment, safety, and health policies and procedures."

One of the Human Rights Policy provisions Monsanto is extremely experienced with is the provision on safety. For many years, Monsanto has had Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH) policies and procedures for our majority-owned and -operated sites. Such policies have helped Monsanto create some of the safest seed operations / conditioning and chemical plants in the industry.

In addition, Monsanto employees visit thousands of farms and other workplace sites around the world to identify and help improve ESH performance. We have provided detailed guidance and resources to ensure that Monsanto employees are taking all necessary precautions to ensure that workers are protected from working conditions likely to endanger their health, safety and welfare.

To learn more about Monsanto's ESH policies and procedures, please refer to the ESH Manual on Monsanto's intranet. This document defines in greater detail Monsanto's safety and health requirements for our majority-owned and -operated facilities.

Question and Answer

What measures does Monsanto take to educate migrant workers in their native languages about the hazards of farm work?

Many migrant farm workers speak and read a language different from that used in their host country/location. Therefore, Monsanto has translated its ESH policies and its employee education materials into the languages of the workers. However, we also know that many people learn better through experience and on-the-job training. Therefore, we do require in-depth and periodic training on workplace hazards for all Monsanto employees as well as for our indirect and temporary workers.
