Compensation

"Monsanto will pay wages that meet or exceed the legally required wages or, where no wage law exists, the local industry standard."

At Monsanto, all employees are entitled to lawful compensation for the work that they perform. No one will be paid less than the legal minimum wage applicable for a standard workweek. When and where eligible, employees will be compensated for all overtime hours at the legally or contractually mandated premium rates. Monsanto is committed to ensuring that employees are compensated in accordance with the above policy. Monsanto will work closely with its business partners on a continuous improvement standard to help them compensate their employees properly.

Question and Answer

Seasonal workers may be paid by the hour or by the piece. Regardless of the method of compensation, should our farmers always guarantee wages at the local minimum? What if the workers are inexperienced and therefore unable to work as efficiently as their co-workers?*

The Monsanto Human Rights Policy provision on compensation requires that all Monsanto employees be paid at or above the legal minimum for all hours worked, even those who are paid on a piece-rate basis. Performance issues should be handled separately. If we discover that a business partner is not meeting legal compensation levels, we will work with key business leaders to implement remediation efforts based on a model of continuous improvement.
