Why are Human Rights Important to Business?
Although the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and the International Labor Organization’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work give governments the ultimate responsibility of protecting the rights of their citizens, these declarations also extend the promotion and protection of human and labor rights obligation to “every individual and organ of society.” This extension requests that the private sector support governments in advancing human rights within their “spheres of influence.” Monsanto believes that companies have an important role to play in protecting and advancing the human rights of their employees and those of their business partners. Doing so fulfills an important societal expectation for businesses to remain good corporate citizens by respecting the religious, cultural and ethical concerns of people throughout the world.
