Soy Yield Intrinsic Development

As the world’s population increases – to an estimated 9 billion people by 2050 – so does the need to produce more feed and fuel from each acre. Monsanto’s first-generation higher-yielding, or intrinsic yield soybeans, are aimed at boosting the inherent yield potential through the insertion of key genes.

Higher-yielding soybeans moved into Phase 3 – and another step closer to farmers’ fields – in the fourth-annual pipeline update. Regulatory trials are planned for this summer.

This product has demonstrated consistent yield enhancement during several seasons of testing in different environments. Higher-yielding soybeans offer farmers the opportunity for increased productivity. Once commercially available, higher-yielding soybeans will build upon the company’s Genuity™ Roundup Ready 2 Yield® platform and provide soybean farmers with a boost to the yield advantage from that product-line.

The consistency of performance has been strong across locations and across seasons – with a targeted performance of 6 percent to 10 percent yield increase compared to elite conventional soybean varieties.

This project is part of our R&D collaboration with BASF on yield and stress. It also is reflective of the growing rate of “genetic gain” in seeds – the improvement in important characteristics such as yield and tolerance to environmental stress – through the use of innovative biotechnology and breeding methods.
