Healthy Plants Produce Healthy Food
Insects love sweet corn as much as you do. And, farmers work hard to keep damaging insects from destroying plants and eating corn before it’s picked from their fields for your dinner table.
For more than a decade, U.S. sweet corn farmers have benefited from advancements in breeding and biotechnology, which allow them to grow plants with beneficial built-in protein (Bacillus thuringiensis or Bt) that protects the sweet corn from damaging insects.
Bt protein comes from a helpful, naturally occurring bacteria that is often used as an insecticide by organic farmers.
When built into the plant, Bt protein not only provides insect protection from sweet corn pests, allowing farmers to decrease insecticide (pesticide) applications by as much as 85%, but also lets farmers decrease their use of fossil fuels. As a result, sweet corn farmers can grow healthy plants, and we all have access to ears of sweet corn that are nutritious, fresh and flavorful.
