Jack Nelson, grains manager for VeraSun Energy in Aurora, South Dakota, sees the Processor Preferred® program as a win-win for his ethanol plant as well as local growers.
“We benefit by participating with Monsanto in research to improve fermentation and being able to originate as many bushels of high fermentable corn as possible,” he says.
“The Processor Preferred HFC products definitely provide higher ethanol yield, which means more profit.”
The plant, with an annual capacity to produce 120 million gallons of ethanol, buys HFC grain from farmers in a 50-mile radius. “The farmers’ first concern is getting the best yield potential and top price for their corn,” Nelson says. “The Processor Preferred products are bred with the genetics for top grain and ethanol yields.”
Nelson adds that ethanol has been a real boost for the local economy by supporting higher corn prices, adding obs and expanding the local tax base. “It’s one of South Dakota’s largest industries.”
In addition to its Aurora facility, VeraSun has three other plants in operation and four plants under construction in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio and Indiana.
