Aurora, Nebraska, corn and soybean producer Steve Akerson and his dad, Ron, planted Processor Preferred® HFC hybrids on 100 percent of their 800 corn acres in 2007 after several years of experimentation with these higher-value corn hybrids on limited acres.
“It just seemed like the right thing to do,” said Akerson, who farms in Hamilton County, Nebraska, between Grand Island and Lincoln. “The HFC hybrids yield as well or better as the non-HFC corn hybrids, and you can’t beat the premium at the elevator.”
According to Akerson, he and his dad pick up an 8-cent to 10-cent premium per bushel on the Processor Preferred HFC corn. “This translates into an extra $20 per acre in revenue for us to grow and sell the HFC hybrids,” he says.
The farmer also notes that the Processor Preferred HFC classification is readily available in a wide range of popular corn hybrids and over 90 seed brands. “These are the hybrids we prefer to plant anyway,” said Akerson, who sells most of his corn to the local Aurora Co-op.
