Indiana Grower Looks Forward to Processor Preferred® Opportunity

With plans by Monsanto to introduce Processor Preferred® High Fermentable Corn hybrids in Indiana for the 2008 growing season, Leesburg, Ind. farmer Kip Tom is eager to participate in the growing market for alternative fuels.

“As a producer and someone who has watched the biofuels industry unfold, the Processor Preferred platform of seed genetics will allow us to satisfy the needs for both the food and fuel markets,” he says.

Tom, who farms in a five-county region, said several ethanol plants are now operating in his area and several new processing facilities are under construction. “The Processor Preferred program enables us to coordinate our supply channel by growing products with intended end uses and leveraging our land resources to better and more efficient uses,” he says.

The ethanol industry, Tom notes, strongly benefits rural economies through direct investment in processing plants and job creation. “Farmers benefit indirectly because a new demand is created locally for their products, and we find that ethanol plants are willing to pay a premium,” he adds. “These products offer a positive return to growers on a per-acre basis.”
