Processor Preferred® HFC Products Help Iowa Farmer Diversify

Jerry Haverly has been planting Processor Preferred® High Fermentable Hybrids for about three years. This season, he planted about 1,000 acres of these products on his Goldfield, Iowa, farm, or 95 percent of his total corn production.

From a performance standpoint, Haverly says his Processor Preferred hybrids, mostly DEKALB products, have excellent standability and early drydown. And being able to supply the local ethanol plant, in which he is also an investor, means increased profit potential.

“It’s important for my operation, because it helps to provide balance when fuel prices are higher,” he explains. “It provides another advantage as far as a pricing opportunity.”

“Working together with the seed companies, the co-op and the ethanol plant, we can match up products that perform well in the field and all the way through the system for a better return,” he adds.

It also makes Haverly feel good to know he is helping to reduce dependence on foreign oil. “We’re doing something good for the consumers. We want to promote and use what we grow – it’s a way to diversify.”
