Monsanto commenced manufacturing at Antwerp in 1966. Currently it operates seven production units on behalf of the five multinational enterprises listed below.
The 5 multinational enterprises:
Monsanto
Headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri (USA) is a leading edge multinational agricultural
company with activities in crop protection products, seeds and biotechnology. Through
combining the core capabilities and synergies of these sectors it is ideally placed
to develop new, high-added value products.
Flexsys, with headquarters in Bussels, is a joint venture between Solutia (formerly Monsanto) and Akzo Nobel. It is the world's leading producer of rubber chemicals and related products.
National Starch a subsidiary of UK-based ICI, is a world-leader in the production of glues, synthetic polymers, electronic materials and such.
Solutia the former chemical arm of Monsanto, manufactures a variety of products primarily for the automotive industries. It too is headquartered in St. Louis.
Ferro with headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio (USA) is specialised in coatings, pigments, plastics and chemicals.
The non-manufacturing support departments located at Antwerp belong to Monsanto but provide services for all companies. Included are quality determination, logistics, maintenance, projects engineering, security, human resources, accounting, utilities supply and information technology.
All permanent staff working on-site, across all functions, are employed by Monsanto.
The 7 production units:
Glyphosate Monsanto is the active ingredient of the successful and environmentally friendly herbicide Roundup®. This weed-killer is absorbed through the leaf and destroys the plant down to the root. Its applications are quite varied, ranging from grassland management to control of weeds in grain crops, vineyards, or orchards, etc.
AG Packaging Monsanto is where agricultural products are formulated, packaged and labeled prior to sale within Europe, Africa and Japan.
PPD Flexsys produces Santoflex®, an anti-degradent for natural and synthetic rubbers. It protects car and truck tyres from perishing through oxygen and ozone attack. In 1997 a second unit (PPD-2) was added.
Sulphenamides Flexsys produces a range of vulcanisation accelerators for natural and synthetic rubbers. Santocure CBS® is one of the most widely used accelerators in the European tyre industry.
Plasticisers Ferro supplies a variety of plasticisers which are used in floor coverings, polyurethane foams, sealants, rubbers and synthetic leathers.
Butvar Solutia is a resin which is further processed at the Solutia Ghent plant into Saflex®, the intermediate layer in safety glass. Applications are car windows, and architectural/security/bulletproof glazing.
Duro-Tak National Starch produces acrylic glues. The range comprises a whole series of water-resistant, pressure sensitive glues with a wide range of applications : medical plasters, decorative vinyl, labels and others.
