Connecting Technology

It’s an actual opportunity for the growers to actually see the technology, how it works, how it actually shows up in the field and what are the benefits that go all the way from the greenhouse and from the great inventions of our scientists in St. Louis and around the U.S. and how they actually show up. They can experience those, ask questions, and so by the time they purchase those products, we can be sure they’ll be successful using them.”

We invest in technologies, we invest by bringing new traits, new products and new genetics to the market. But at the same time, it’s just as important to invest in how we help train and make sure farmers are ready to use these technologies, because our sustainable yield initiative is not something we can do on our own; it’s something we need to partner with growers. It starts with what we’re doing at these learning centers, which is sharing how we use those technologies and how we make a difference, so by the time they take it to their own farms they truly experience that, and we continue to build on that partnership.”

Sustainable Yield

Audio Transcript: “Monsanto has made a commitment to sustainable yield, and our intention is to work with the agricultural industry to help farmers find a way to double yields by 2030 for corn, cotton and soybeans. While we double yields by 2030, we are going to reduce the key resources that are inputs required as resources for producing those yields. We look at the plan for accomplishing this objective in really three different platforms or pillars: the first is plant breeding, continuing to improve the hybrids and varieties that we bring to the marketplace; plant biotechnology, where we actually add beneficial genes to the crops to improve the productivity even more; and the third critical pillar is about the agronomic practices that are used in the production of these crops – all of the things that we pull together around plant populations, row spacing, conservation tillage and other practices that are actually able to help us optimize the value of the new technology and hybrids that we’re bringing to the marketplace. Gothenburg will be a location where we’re testing and demonstrating all three pillars together as a holistic system for the farmer.”

Audio Transcript: “We chose Gothenburg as the location for our new learning center because it sits at the transition between the Western dry land acres in corn production and the Eastern irrigated acres. So, it’s really uniquely situated for testing the types of environment we need for our new technology like drought-tolerance, nitrogen utilization and the new hybrids we’re bringing to the marketplace.”

Audio Transcript: “Some of the agronomic practices that will be highlighted at Gothenburg include irrigated and non-irrigated plots. We actually have the capability to compare plots in a side-by-side situation in a dry land scenario and irrigated scenario and even different types of irrigation with different position technologies to control the levels of irrigation we use. Within those situations which are so critical to corn production in the Nebraska environment, we’ll be looking at planting populations, different row spacings, different uses of seed treatments like Acceleron, different plant protection agents like fungicides, different tillage system and really the entire system of agronomic practices that are used in the production of corn crop.”
