Cleaning Can Minimize the Spread of Infection

In the event of a pandemic caused by a virus (influenza) or other infectious disease, workplaces and homes should be cleaned and disinfected with greater vigilance to help minimize the spread of the disease.

The following should be included in cleaning programs:

  • All workplace areas, with special emphasis on frequently touched surfaces such as door handles, light switches, elevator buttons and copy machine controls

  • Filters of the air-conditioning systems should be cleaned and anti-bacteria solution applied

  • Telephones in common areas should be cleaned at least daily

  • Antibacterial solutions should be applied to all common areas, counters, railings, washbasins, toilet bowls, urinals and septic tanks (if applicable) daily

When used appropriately, disinfectant cleaners are effective and inexpensive. This table provides some suggestions:


Disinfectants Use for Precautions
Household bleach (Sodium hypochlorite):

  • Should be used in well-ventilated areas
  • Protective clothing required while handling and using undiluted bleach
  • Do not mix with strong acids to avoid release of chlorine gas
  • Corrosive to metals
Solution of 1 part bleach to 50 parts water (1/3 cup per gallon of water)
General cleaning of hard surfaces
Use a solution of 1 part bleach to 9 parts water Disinfection of material contaminated with blood or body fluids
Granular chlorine:
Dilute according to manufacturer's instructions.

May be used in place of liquid bleach, if it is unavailable


  • Same as above
Alcohol:
Choose Isopropyl (at least 70%) or ethyl alcohol (at least 60%).

Smooth metal surfaces, tabletops and other surfaces on which bleach cannot be used

  • Flammable, toxic
  • Use only in well-ventilated areas
  • Avoid inhalation
  • Keep away from heat sources, electrical equipment, flames
  • Allow it to dry completely
