In the event of a pandemic caused by a virus (influenza) or other infectious disease, workplaces and homes should be cleaned and disinfected with greater vigilance to help minimize the spread of the disease.
The following should be included in cleaning programs:
All workplace areas, with special emphasis on frequently touched surfaces such as door handles, light switches, elevator buttons and copy machine controls
Filters of the air-conditioning systems should be cleaned and anti-bacteria solution applied
Telephones in common areas should be cleaned at least daily
Antibacterial solutions should be applied to all common areas, counters, railings, washbasins, toilet bowls, urinals and septic tanks (if applicable) daily
When used appropriately, disinfectant cleaners are effective and inexpensive. This table provides some suggestions:
| Disinfectants | Use for | Precautions |
| Household bleach (Sodium hypochlorite): |
|
|
| Solution of 1 part bleach to 50 parts water (1/3 cup per gallon of water) |
General cleaning of hard surfaces | |
| Use a solution of 1 part bleach to 9 parts water | Disinfection of material contaminated with blood or body fluids | |
| Granular chlorine: Dilute according to manufacturer's instructions. |
May be used in place of liquid bleach, if it is unavailable |
|
| Alcohol: Choose Isopropyl (at least 70%) or ethyl alcohol (at least 60%). |
Smooth metal surfaces, tabletops and other surfaces on which bleach cannot be used |
|
