What is Roundup Ready® canola?
Monsanto has utilised gene technology to develop canola plants that are tolerant to applications of Roundup Ready Herbicide with PLANTSHIELD® by Monsanto. This technology enables the canola plant to produce two enzymes, one of which protects it from the glyphosate and the other which degrades the glyphosate. Both genes (which are responsible for the enzymes) are linked and transferred together through plant breeding.
Why do growers choose Roundup Ready canola?
Roundup Ready canola offers growers effective broad spectrum weed control, with no soil residue carry-over to affect following crops. Excellent grass and broadleaf weed control has been observed in the farming systems trials throughout Australia, and is well documented overseas.
Roundup Ready canola is a tool which can assist growers with Integrated Weed Management (IWM). Its strategic use within the cropping rotation can reduce weed numbers and allow growers to rotate away from higher resistance risk herbicide groups, e.g. Group As = Fops and Dims and Group Bs = sulfonylureas and imidazolinones.
What about regulatory approvals?
In 2003 after a rigorous evaluation process involving independent experts and a review of approximately 400 studies, the Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) declared Roundup Ready canola to be as safe as conventional canola with regard to human health, safety and the environment.1 In the same year, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) approved Roundup Ready canola for human consumption.
