Monsanto are pleased to congratulate the CSIRO Cotton Breeding and Biotechnology Team, who yesterday were awarded the prestigious CSIRO Chairman’s Medal in recognition of outstanding breeding and deployment success.
In 2010/11 the cotton variety Sicot 71BRF, which was developed by the team, was over 80% of the cotton planted in notably Australia’s largest ever cotton crop.
“This is a fantastic achievement and well deserved recognition for the CSIRO Cotton Breeding and Biotechnology Team”. Monsanto Country Lead, Peter O’Keeffe said.
“Sicot 71BRF delivers both of our biotech traits, Bollgard® II and Roundup Ready Flex® in a desirable agronomic package combining high yield, good quality and high disease resistance, which growers are clearly taking advantage of, said O’Keeffe.
“Varietal development is a critical element in preserving the future of our industry, providing growers the necessary tools to achieve productivity gains on the farm.
“This recognition highlights the important role research and development plays in the cotton industry, and shows the CSIRO Cotton Breeding and biotechnology team are world leaders in their field , O’Keeffe said.
The cotton industry is a good case study for demonstrating how investment in research and development contribute to building a strong and innovative sector.
