Restored Des Moines Public Library Building to become Permanent Home of the World Food Prize

The World Food Prize is restoring the historic Des Moines Public Library Building. The building will become the permanent home of the World Food Prize and will also serve as:

  • A convocation center for the Borlaug Dialogue, a yearly conference that brings together global experts, business leaders, research scientists and government policy makers for a dialogue on the most pressing food security issues facing the planet.

  • Headquarters for the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute, a program that brings high school students and teachers together to discuss issues involved in countering world hunger and sends students on international internships to Africa, Asia and Latin America.

  • Site of the annual Iowa Hunger Summit, an event held for the first time in 2007 in recognition of United Nations World Food Day to enhance public attention to both the causes of and solutions to hunger and to encourage increased action and partnership among Iowans to continue fighting hunger.

  • Museum open to the public to recognize the achievements of Americans in feeding the world.

  • Educational facility with interactive displays on issues related to global hunger and food production.

After accepting a $5 million donation from Monsanto Company on February 15, 2008, the World Food Prize has now secured nearly half the funds needed to complete the renovation project. The Norman Borlaug Hall of Laureates is scheduled to be completed in 2010.
