Decatur, Ill., (August 28, 2007) — The second-annual Farm Progress Show Inventors Challenge sponsored by Roundup agricultural herbicides will showcase the 10 finalists with their inventions. Entrants from around the country submitted their photos and product descriptions that were previously evaluated by a panel of judges. This group of farmers used their imagination, ingenious thinking and experimental natures to create inventions that help producers increase their productivity, safety, efficiency and advance technology in agriculture.
Roundup® agricultural herbicide is the proud sponsor of the Inventor’s Challenge in honor of Dr. John Franz, Ph.D., who was recently inducted into the National Inventor’s Hall of Fame for his discovery of Roundup’s active ingredient.
In 1970, Dr. Franz discovered the glyphosate class of herbicides while searching for a systemic product that would be effective against perennial and annual weeds. As the active ingredient in Roundup herbicides, glyphosate eliminates more than 125 kinds of weeds. Today, Roundup agricultural herbicides are unsurpassed in weed control and the world’s top-selling herbicides.
“Dr. Franz’s discovery has had a significant positive impact on farmers for over 30 years. His contribution to agriculture has enabled farmers to control weeds with minimal tillage, helping them to conserve topsoil, time and fuel,” said Chad Bush, marketing manager for Roundup. “Dr. Franz’s innovation is a great inspiration to the farmers submitting their entries for the Inventor’s Challenge and as the proud sponsor of the Inventor’s Challenge we support and look forward to the innovative ideas that will also make farming more efficient.”
The Inventors Challenge offers show visitors a chance to pick their favorite invention, which they can see in and around the Prairie Farmer Hospitality tent during the show. The contest’s top three winners tap into $5,250 in cash prizes. The top 10 finalist inventions will be displayed at the show held at Decatur, Ill., Aug. 28-30.
