Processor Preferred® High-Fermentable Corn Hybrids Demonstrate Monsanto Commitment to Ethanol Industry

ST. LOUIS (March 1, 2007) — The booming ethanol industry means strong demand from dry-mill ethanol plants for High Fermentable Corn (HFC) to obtain the highest possible ethanol yields. Corn growers can participate in this market by growing Monsanto's Processor Preferred® High Fermentable Corn hybrids.

Available in more than 90 different seed brands, Processor Preferred HFC products are offered in hybrids with high yield potential and can provide up to 2 to 4 percent more ethanol per bushel than average corn, enabling farmers to profit from the growing demand for alternative fuels.

"Processor Preferred High Fermentable Corn products deliver higher potential return for grower investors and local corn growers, while still providing hybrids with strong agronomics and yield," said Troy Hobbs, Corn Biofuels Strategy Lead for Monsanto. "They also provide economic benefits for rural communities and help the U.S. become more energy independent."

Hobbs noted that Processor Preferred products are offered with Monsanto's leading traits – YieldGard® in-plant insect control and Roundup Ready® Corn 2, which supports more flexible weed control as part of the Roundup Ready Corn 2 System. This means farmers can select products with high yield potential that are best suited to their operations. Some ethanol plants, he added, pay a premium for Processor Preferred hybrids.

Hobbs said Monsanto's commitment to the ethanol industry also consists of support for 46 dry-mill ethanol plants, including originating HFC products, providing analytical tools and grower outreach, as well as financial support for installation of E-85 pumps in rural communities and incentives for growers who purchase General Motors E-85 Flex Fuel Vehicles.

"As a company focused solely on agriculture, Monsanto is committed creating new market opportunities that help make farmers successful," said Hobbs. He said the Processor Preferred program represents a win-win for all participants.

"First, the farmer benefits because of the opportunity to realize high yields," he said. "Second, there may be the opportunity to earn a premium. The third thing is the ethanol plant is going to get more ethanol yield out of the product. And finally, the general consumer and the United States win because we're more energy independent."
